刀を抜いて対峙し、斬り合うのが剣道（剣術）であり、刀を抜かずして、鞘に収めたまま相手の動きに応じて対応するのが居合です。

つまり、いつ、いかなる時でも臨機応変に敵に対応し、勝ちを制する刀法をいいます。居合は、林崎勘助重信公（永禄年間末期の人）が中興の祖とされていますが、それから、500年以上に亘って連綿と現代まで受け継がれてきています。

現代社会においては、刀で斬り合うということはありませんので、居合いを通じて、心身を鍛練することが目的となっています。
長い間に、色んな流派が発生していますが、現在、いちばん大きな流派は、無双直伝英信流です。

なお、居合は「動く禅」と例えられています。
又、現代において、日本刀（真剣）を使用する唯一の武道です。

IAIDO
Confronted by an opponent you draw your sword in response to his attack. In other words you are able to be victorious anywhere and anytime. The founder of iai was Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu. Hayashizaki was born in Dewa province in 1546, he passed away in 1621. Iai has been handed down in an unbroken line for over 500 years. In modern society there is no need to fight with swords so what is the purpose you may ask. The goal of iai lies in the discipline of the mind and body. Iaido has been referred to as “moving zen” as it promotes harmony and stillness in the mind and body. There are many different styles or schools of iaido and currently one of the largest is Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, the style taught at our school. Iaido is one of the few martial arts that use a real Japanese sword. So the practise must be sincere and focused with great attention to detail.
