The famous gate is now the entrance for many tourists. There were actually three camps, Auschwitz I, II (Birkenau), and III (Monowice). Auschwitz I is now used as a museum, and everyone becomes silent as he/she goes through the rooms of exhibition. In Auschwitz I, the gas chamber and crematorium remain (some destroyed but reconstructed).

Auschwitz I was originally constructed for Polish political prisoners. For Birkenau (Auschwitz II) where more "efficient execution" of Jews (and other people) on a far larger scale was done, click.
