[Chapter 1, where the Editors try to compare the 1st edition (1839) and the 2nd edition (1845) of Journal of Researches (popularly known as Voyage of Beagle), is important and interesting; but we may be unable to read this portion in the class. This is important because Darwin wrote down Sketch and Essay during the period of these 6 years. The revision of the 2nd edition would certainly reflect the major theory he formulated in this period.]

ダーウィン略年表
1809年2月 イングランド、シュルーズベリで生まれる。
1825年 医学を学ぶためエディンバラ大学に入る。
1828年 ケンブリッジ大学に入る。
1831年 軍艦ビーグル号に乗り、世界一周の航海に出発。
1836年 イギリスに帰着。
1837年 種の起源に関するノートブックを書き始める。
1839年 『ビーグル号航海記』
1842年 自説の概要を鉛筆書きで記す（『スケッチ』）。
1844年 概要を拡充した原稿を書く（『エッセイ』）。
1851-54年 フジツボの研究を出版、53年にはこの研究でロイヤル・メダルを受賞。
1856年 ウォレスの論文を読んで驚いたライエルに焚き付けられ、Big Species Book の執筆にかかる。
1856年10月 マレー群島にいたウォレスはダーウィンに宛てて最初の手紙を送り、両者の文通が始まる。
1858年6月？ ウォレスが自然淘汰説を述べた論文が届き、ライエルとフッカーに相談する。
1858年7月 ロンドンのリンネ学会でダーウィンとウォレスの説が同時発表される。ダーウィンは直ちに『種の起源』の執筆にかかる。
1859年11月 『種の起源』
1868年 『飼育栽培動植物の変異』（Big Species Book の最初の2章に相当）
1871年 『人間の由来』
1872年 『人間および動物における感情の表現』
1881年 ミミズと腐植土の研究
1882年4月 死去。
ダーウィンの伝記といえば、デズモンド＆ムーア『ダーウィン』（工作舎）がもっとも充実しているが、定価18000円は諸君らには痛すぎるだろう。節約したいなら、英語版（原典、22ドル程度）を読むべし（オモロイことは保証する！）。ダーウィン研究を目指すなら、この程度の厚さの英書にしり込みするようでは話にならん。「鉄は熱いうちに打て！」この忠告は、学部生にもやデ！文学部に来て「英語読むのシンドイ」なんてあまえるんじゃネエ、××か。
